What to Expect in an Audition- How to Prepare

  • Solo/Tone Quality- Prepare a song to sing (a cappella, i.e., without accompaniment). You want to show that you’re versatile in your first audition. If you make callbacks, be sure to take all suggestions- we’re just trying to see how moldable you are. You don’t have to be perfect right away.
  • Sight Reading- We will test your sight-reading skills. We will have a 5-10 measure exercise. You will have a short amount of time to practice it, but don’t worry- it won’t make or break you. We’re not looking for perfection. We just want to see that you have a method to work through an example. Subdivide, work out the intervals, repeat hard jumps or rhythms during your practice time and it won’t matter if you get it 100% correct when the practice time is up.
  • Tonal Memory- We will sing or play a sequence of notes and ask you to sing it back to us. This is simply testing your ability to hear and repeat music. We need to know how you learn and how quickly you learn.
  • Range- We WILL be testing your range using a choral-type warm-up. Many times we are looking for specific voice parts in auditions. Sometimes you may have more of a range than you think which improves your chances of making the group. Be willing to let us push you.
  • Stage Presence- Perform for us! Express yourself in your solo. Give us a taste of what you might add to the group in performance. We want to know that the audience will enjoy you on stage.
  • Attitude/Availability- Know that we will take your commitment level into account. We have attendance policies and commitment from every member is crucial to this kind of group!
  • Blend/Balance- This is usually a part of callbacks where we will teach you part of one of our songs and have you sing in trios or quartets with members of the group. Whether or not you can blend with our group will be taken into account. Again, take suggestions and implement them as best you can during the audition. The more you show you are willing to change, the more potential we see in you.

Audition Tips

  • Prepare a song to sing that showcases your voice. For instance, if you’re a soprano, pick a song that shows off your high range- and don’t growl down low. The same goes for an alto- we don’t want you to screech up top. We want to hear your strengths.
  • Although vocal training and experience is helpful and sometimes important, be aware that we are not a choral group. Look at the group’s repertoire and get a feel for the style of music that we do. It’s just as important to us that you are able to drop the choral vowels and do a great rock song.
  • Be early, be flexible. Auditions often run longer than expected, and sometimes they’re even finished early.
  • Be willing to try something if we ask you to. One of the qualities we look for is confidence!

Break a leg! We look forward to seeing you at auditions!
